Sports Training
A Special Olympics Ontario Sports Club is the venue where sports training for athletes occur. In order for athletes to reach their athletic potential, a variety of responsibilities are placed on the Sports Club. This is to ensure that coaches can train athletes in a safe environment, have access to competitive opportunities and other events, and to ensure a strong future for Special Olympics Ontario.
Training
In order to be adequately prepared for competition, athletes can expect to receive approximately 2 1/2 hours per week of sports training from their Sports Club. This translates to 30 hours or 3 months of training prior to a Provincial Competition.
Each training session should be broken down into a Warm Up, Basic Motor Skills, Sport Specific Skills, Fitness and Cool down components.
During training sessions athletes can expect to receive coaching appropriate to their skill level and to be challenged. All athletes can expect to be treated equitably by their coaches, and participate in a safe environment.
Athletes can expect their coaches to abide by the Coaching Code of Ethics, be positive role models, and be knowledgeable and certified in their sport.
Administration
Athletes can expect that the Sports Club will register him or her with SOO, and that records will be accurately maintained on his or her behalf.
Athletes can expect to have Competition/Event Registration information and other logistics completed for Regional Competitions.
Athletes can expect that the Head Coach will attend Pre-Season's Coaches Meetings to become informed about sport specific and competition details for the upcoming season.
Athletes can expect that the Sports Club will liaison with other Community Administrative volunteers when appropriate.
